Big Gus

Sullen got the pleasure to catch up with artist Big Gus for a little interview to talk about what’s been going on, what’s coming up and his book release. If you are not aware of Big Gus then you definitely need to brush up and do some homework because Big Gus is an All Star and awesome to work with. Gus has been with us for years now doing collab pieces as a featured artist and the relationship has worked out perfect, so perfect that the Fallen Angel tee he had done for us still kills it in stores. Gus is a really busy man so him fitting us in goes to show how much love he has for the Sullen family and we are so stoked to have him. He is so passionate about what he does so it was great catching up with Gus for this grilling interview, check out what he had to say below and please share your thoughts.

Sullen- What’s up Big Gus how’s everything going?

Big Gus- Everything is great man just been on the move last few weeks getting ready for my art show for the book project at Time Line Gallery.

Sullen- How long have you been tattooing?

Big Gus- Well if u add up just my shop years 13 homes.!

Sullen- What’s the reason you love tattooing?

Big Gus- WOW that could take hours man!Right off the bat I love knowing that somebody trust me enough to put my art on there skin and to give me the freedom and creativity to do something on there skin is an honor because this is a lifetime commitment.

Sullen- Where are you from?

Big Gus- Raised in LOS ANGELES CA.

Sullen- Did anyone influence you to start tattooing?

Big Gus- HELL YAH spray paint artist like OG Abel,MR Cartoon,Risk,HEX airbrush artist like Craig Fraiser,TOONS,tattoo artist of course JACK RUDY
FREDDY NEGRETE, PAUL BOOTH, TOM RENSHAL, BOB TYRRELL , MARK MAHONEY so many others.

Sullen- Do you compare your style to anyone?

Big Gus- My style is a style born from the streets so i would say every artist before me that layed the way of OG street style black and grey fineline !

Sullen- What kind of music do you like?

Big Gus- I ike many kinds of music but I would say my favorite is The Blues man.

Sullen- Black and Grey or Color which do you prefer?

Big Gus- CMON..! BLACK AND GREY OF COURSE:.

Sullen- Is there one thing that inspires you before you start working like music or anything?

Big Gus- Yah looking at my friends art they just posted on twitter….;] and some good music to get me in that mood, but inspiration comes in many forms as an artist looking at my world around me anything can spark my imagination .

Sullen- You favorite place to eat?

Big Gus- Anywhere they good some dank fish tacos.

Sullen- Favorite drink?

Big Gus- orange Jarritos orange soda

Sullen- What’s the most memorable tattoo you have done?

Big Gus- The trian piece on a old friends stomach of the mexican revolution

Sullen- How did your relationship with Sullen come about?

Big Gus-I was at the first Musink and I heard and saw some stuff my friend Tom Berg had done and was very impressed. I heard they had a booth there
and walked over to check out what they had going and Ryan Smith was there AND BANG the rest is history.

Sullen- What’s your favorite item from Sullen?

Big Gus- EVERYTHING!!

Sullen- Who’s your favorite Sullen Angel?

Big Gus- I dont really have one sorry G.!

Sullen- If you weren’t tattooing what would you be doing?

Big Gus- I would be bored out of my mind I guess, but something with art would take over.!

Sullen- This weekend you are doing Black and Grays Finest Art for Autism at the TimeLine Gallery, explain what’s going on and why your raising awareness for autism ?

Big Gus- Well since 2009 i started this book project with 130 artist and we finally arrived to the art show.We are having an art show with all the original pieces, each piece will be auctioned off this means you will have the chance to win some top dog originals which people never will get this chance again because artists don’t let anything go we know that. Part of the proceeds will go to making the book project which then will go towards the charity that we will be helping out with children in the tattoo community. This means all artist involved are partaking in a constant donation by each book sale. The reason for AUTISM is because 6 years ago I met this great lil guy named Damian Cisneros he is my girl Rubys nephew which later on became my godson and at 2 years old we found out he had Autism, so this was and will always be my reason because having him come into my life is what made me be aware of Autism so i just want to spread awareness about this subject and to inform people in one great book one great art show. By the way if u missed, u missed one of the biggest tattoo art shows ever! That place was packed outside and in, special thanks to Ryan Smith, Mike Devries, Uncle Mike, Eddie of H2 ocean for being the top buyers at the show.

Sullen- What’s a hidden talent of yours?

Big Gus- hahhahaha believe it or not its fishing IM REALLY GOOD AT IT..!

Sullen- Anything on the horizon for Big Gus, any projects you want to let your fans know about?

Big Gus- Black and Greys Finest dvd on black and grey tattooing with some world class tattoo artist involved and of course all the new stuff Ryan Smith and I will be working on for the next dope shirts

Sullen- Best place you have traveled to?

Big Gus- Anywere I get to see my closet friends at tattoo conventions.

Sullen- Worst place you have traveled to?

Big Gus- Dayton Ohio
