21 Questions with Vicky Morgan

Reposted from Sullen.

Today I decided to get into the mind of UK artist Vicky Morgan and ask her 21 questions, I mixed it up a bit to suit Vicky more and let me tell you this was fun. Vicky is awesome, great person and a very talented artist whether it’s tattooing or painting Vicky manages to somehow blend classic new school images with a certain femininity and an attention for detail that we have yet to see before. After doing some homework and much needed research on Vicky I became more interested because she hasn’t been doing this for that long and she has created such a large fan base and even a bigger buzz around the industry, she is making a mark. Matter of fact she was the receptionist for a while at the tattoo shop she was working at and just caught on as she became more interested in wanting to do it herself rather then booking people for the people she worked for. Vicky has definitely caught the eyes of the Sullen Family so much that some of her designs have been so popular in the past (mens and womans t’s) that we recently added a couple to the new Sullen Angels line which we are very pleased about. Thanks for checking in and please don’t hesitate to let us know what you think and share this article, for now enjoy what Vicky had to say.

Sullen- What’s up Vicky how’s everything going?

Vicky- Hey, I’m very good thanks. Busy but very happy.

Sullen- How long have you been tattooing?

Vicky- It’s still pretty early days for me, been tattooing full time now for 2 years but was working in a studio previously on reception for about 6 years. Still feel like I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m loving it.

Sullen- What’s the reason you love tattooing?

Vicky- It’s great to get to be creative everyday, and to have a job I genuinely love. I have really great customers already that I’m very grateful for. I have a massive respect for tattooing and feel very lucky to be a part of it.

Sullen- Where are you from?

Vicky- England

Sullen- How is the tattoo scene where you live, is it popular or getting there?

Vicky- Tattooing over here has definitely got a lot more popular in the last few years. I think there’s a bigger range of people coming it to get tattooed and they have their own ideas about what they want tattooing, the internet seems to have opened it up a lot as well as reality based t.v. shows. There are a lot more tattoo studios opening up and the shop I work at has expanded greatly in the last year.

Sullen- Did anyone influence you to start tattooing?

Vicky- Originally the sort of music I was listening to as a young teenager opened my eyes up to tattoos. I’ve always drawn since I was a child and I started drawing more and more tattoo related designs which got noticed by a studio. It took me a long time to actually get the right apprenticeship and start tattooing, and my friends were a massive influence on me at the time, they encouraged me to keep going, in particular my late friend Sumo, who watched me do my first ever tattoo and helped get me an apprenticeship with Matt Hunt at Modern Body Art. If it wasn’t for Matt and Jo Harrison, I may not be tattooing now.

Sullen- Do you compare your style to anyone?

Vicky- No one in particular, I think waiting for an apprenticeship for so long meant I could concentrate on developing my own drawing style. I guess it probably shows that I’m heavily influenced by the neo traditional stuff as well as chinese and japanese painting.

Sullen- What kind of music do you like?

Vicky- A massive range depending on my mood, but I have always loved bands like Deftones, Pantera, Norma Jean, Nora and Life of Agony, to name a few. I’m also a bit of a Gaga fan, if I’m being completely honest!?

Sullen- Black and Grey or Color which do you prefer?

Vicky- The majority of work I’ve collected on myself is black and grey but I do a lot of traditional tattoos and I prefer doing those in color.

Sullen- Is there one thing that inspires you before you start working like music or anything?

Vicky- Having a cool piece to do always inspires me, just the thought of doing a design i’ve been looking forward to is enough for me.

Sullen- You favorite place to eat?

Vicky- Yo Sushi!

Sullen- Favorite drink?

Vicky- Starbucks soy caramel macchiato or white wine!

Sullen- What’s the most memorable tattoo you have done?

Vicky- Very difficult question, probably my first one, which was a small diamond on my own leg, that experience was intense as i’d been waiting for it for so long and I will remember that day forever.

sullen- How did your relationship with Sullen come about?

Vicky- Ryan contacted me about a design of mine that one of his customers had brought into his studio. I think it was possibly from a english magazine that did an article on my paintings. So I’m very glad that it made it’s way to California. Still pinching myself about being involved with such an awesome company and family.

Sullen- What’s your favorite item from Sullen?

Vicky- I absolutely love the Blaq Paq, I’ve raved about it to everyone I work with, it’s just so practical, especially when doing guest spots and conventions.

Sullen- If you weren’t tattooing what would you be doing?

Vicky- I would probably still be working on reception at the studio. I wouldn’t want to not be a part of the industry, tattooing really has become a lifestyle for me. And i’d probably still be painting in my spare.

Sullen- You are currently tattooing out of Bodycraft Tattoos, explain how that is going?

Vicky- To be honest the studio isn’t always ideal for me but the positives are that I get to work with some of my closest friends and have awesome customers, they’re the ones that I’m there for.

Sullen- What’s a hidden talent of yours?

Vicky- I sadly don’t think I really have one.

Sullen- Anything on the horizon for you, any projects you want to let your fans know about?

Vicky- Well it looks like things are going to be really busy. A couple of the guys I work with and I have branched out to promote ourselves as Ghost House Collective, we’re going to be doing a few tattoo conventions over here. We completed our first 60 page sketch book last year and so we’ll hopefully start getting to work on volume 2, in between all the tattooing. Eventually the ideal would be to have our own workspace too, so maybe one day that will be on the horizon!

Sullen- Best place you have traveled to?

Vicky- I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled quite a bit, I loved Hong Kong and Thailand, they were amazing and very inspirational.

Sullen- Worst place you have traveled to?

Vicky- Been pretty lucky so far, so fingers crossed.

Sullen- Anyone you wanna give shout outs to this is your time…..

Vicky- My Ghost House Collective boys, Lee and Justin, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Matt Hunt and Jo Harrison at Modern Body Art for giving me a chance and apprenticeship. Cody Meyer for being an amazing artist and someone who’s supported and encouraged my painting from the start. Valerie Vargas for doing the majority of my tattoos and always giving me something to aspire to and tattoos that blow my mind. Ryan Smith and The Sullen family for letting me be a part of all this and just a massive thanks to everyone thats helped me along the way, customers included.
